ECM-042E
VOLVO
ECM-042E - EGR control Flow fault. Jammed
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the EGR valve. A fault in the valve or its wiring that causes incorrect EGR control sets the code, but it is only set when a related EGR code is already stored and the control module's built-in routine for freeing a jammed valve has failed. Dirt and soot can make the valve stick.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the EGR valve connector
- The EGR valve sticks because of dirt or soot
- Open circuit in the cable to the EGR valve
- Cable to the EGR valve shorted to ground or voltage
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check the EGR valve connector for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Look for soot and dirt at the valve, and have a workshop decide whether it needs cleaning or replacing
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the EGR valve has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground or voltage
- 4Also check that the earth wire has contact and that the supply wire is not shorted to ground
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring to the EGR motor and the valve, as this needs measurement
Symptoms you may notice2
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- Engine torque may be limited
