What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors EGR control. A fault in the valve or its wiring that causes incorrect EGR control sets the code. The causes may be poor contact, the valve sticking from dirt and soot, an open or shorted wire, or a damaged valve.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation at the EGR valve connections
- The EGR valve sticks because of dirt or soot
- Open circuit in the cable to the EGR valve
- Cable to the EGR valve shorted to ground or voltage
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Look at the EGR valve for dirt and soot, since a valve that sticks can cause the fault
- 3Switch off the ignition and check the valve connector for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the cable to the EGR valve has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground or voltage
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve and its wiring
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is switched off
