What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module holds a unique immobiliser code that it compares with the central electronic module (CEM) before the engine may start. If a power cut reaches the engine control module while the comparison is in progress, the fault is set. Low battery voltage can cause this, as can poor contact or a fault in the supply to the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Low battery voltage
- Poor contact, resistance or oxidation at the engine module connector
- Open circuit or short to ground in the supply to the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check the battery charge and voltage. Low battery voltage can cause the fault code to be set
- 2Check that the fuses are intact. Their locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Switch off the ignition and check the connector to the engine control module for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation. Clean it if it is oxidised
- 4Check that the earth point for the engine control module is clean and firmly fixed
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the supply wire to the engine control module has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the immobiliser, as the code has to be compared between the modules
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start or crank, and no clicking sound is heard at a start attempt
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
