What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has logged an internal fault, so the fault lies in the module itself. It can show up as poor throttle response and the malfunction indicator lamp coming on. On cars with the B4204S3 engine from model year 2009, the fault can come from an early software version, and a corrected version exists.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- On cars with the B4204S3 engine from model year 2009: an early software version in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code and see whether it returns after a road test
- 2Check the battery and that its terminals are tight, since voltage disturbances can cause the fault
- 3Check that the accelerator pedal moves freely and that no mat or object is restricting it
- 4Ask a workshop to check the engine control module software; on the B4204S3 engine from 2009, a corrected version is available
- 5If the fault remains after the software check, the engine control module is the likely cause and a workshop should replace it
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
- Poor response from the accelerator
