What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) drives the fuel injectors through an integrated output stage that runs at a much higher voltage than the battery. If a fault is found in the circuits to the injectors, the code is set. Engine speed and torque are limited to a calculated value while the fault is present. The fault may lie in the connectors, the wiring or the injector itself.
Possible causes
- Loose connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the injector connectors
- Short circuit in the wiring to the injectors
- Open circuit or short circuit in the CAN wiring
- Blocked fuel return line from the injectors
- An injector has jammed
- Damaged injector
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors on all the injectors: are they fully engaged and free from oxidation and corrosion?
- 2Inspect the wiring to the injectors for chafing and breaks
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the injector wiring has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to earth (the body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the injectors one at a time and check that each one operates
- 5Check that the fuel return line is not kinked or blocked
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, an injector or the control module is probably at fault; have a workshop determine which and replace it
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator lamp (Check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
- Poor performance or the engine lacks power
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Engine speed and torque are limited to a calculated value
