What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal wire to the starter motor relay. If it sees the signal running too high, the code is set. The fault usually shows up when starting: the engine does not start, does not turn over, or there is no click when you try to start it.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to battery voltage
- Damaged starter motor relay
- Signal wire short-circuited to another supply voltage
What you can do
- 1Check the fuses for the starter circuit in the engine bay fuse box, and check that the battery is in good condition
- 2Check that the battery terminals are tight and that the wiring from the starter motor relay is not chafed
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the starter motor relay is not in contact with battery voltage, for example through chafed wiring
- 4If the wiring is intact and the fault remains, the starter motor relay is probably damaged; have a workshop replace it
