What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the engine speed (RPM) signal from its sensor, which reports how fast the crankshaft is turning. If the sensor gives a signal that does not look right, the code is set. Engine torque may be limited, and the car may feel weaker than usual.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance at the sensor terminals
- Open circuit in the wiring to the engine speed sensor
- Damaged or dirty engine speed sensor
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the engine speed sensor is correctly installed and not damaged
- 2Check that the sensor connector is fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3Check that the sensor is clean, since dirt can affect the signal
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check the engine speed in live data with the engine running; the reading should be steady at idle and change smoothly when the engine is revved
- 5With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no open circuit and is not shorted to earth or to supply voltage
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, the engine control module may be faulty; a workshop should decide whether it needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice2
- The car lacks power or performs poorly
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Engine torque is limited
