Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the signal from the crankshaft sensor with a value it has calculated itself. If the two disagree while the engine is running, the code is set, and engine output and speed may be limited. The fault may be permanent, or it may have occurred earlier and no longer be present.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- Battery or charging system giving unstable voltage
What you can do
- 1Check the battery condition and that the charging system works, since low or unstable voltage can cause the fault
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and check the status of the code; confirm that the fault is no longer active after a road test
- 3If the fault is no longer active it may have been temporary; clear the code and watch whether it reappears
- 4If the code returns, the engine control module is probably damaged and a workshop should decide whether it needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice2
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
- The car lacks power or runs poorly
What the fault can affect2
