What does this fault code mean?
Internal monitoring in the engine control module has found the engine speed signal from the sensor to be faulty, and sets the code while the engine is running. Engine torque may be limited. The causes are the sensor itself, its connector, the wiring to it, or an internal fault in the module.
Possible causes
- Oxidised or loose connection at the engine speed sensor
- Broken wire between the sensor and the control module
- Damaged engine speed sensor
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the sensor is correctly fitted and not damaged or dirty
- 2Check the sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine speed in live data with the engine running; the value should change smoothly as the engine is revved
- 4Use a multimeter to check the sensor wires for open circuits, earth faults and short circuits to voltage
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, the engine control module may be the cause; a workshop should decide whether to replace it
Symptoms you may notice2
- Driving with poor performance or lacking power
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Engine torque is limited
