What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) powers the injectors through its built-in output stage, which runs at a much higher voltage than the battery. If a fault is found in that circuit, the code is set and the ECM restricts speed and torque to values it works out itself. The cause can lie in the connectors, the wiring, a blocked fuel return or an injector.
Possible causes
- Injector connectors loose, with contact resistance or oxidation
- Short circuit in the injector wiring
- Open circuit or short circuit in the CAN wiring
- Fuel return from the injectors blocked
- An injector has jammed
- Damaged injector
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors on all injectors for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Check the injector wiring for breaks and chafing
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the wiring has no short to earth or to supply voltage
- 4Check that the fuel return is not blocked
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, have it operate the injectors one at a time and check that each one responds
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop decide whether an injector or the control module is the cause and replace it
Symptoms you may notice3
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
- Poor performance or lacking power
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM holds speed and torque to values it calculates
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
