What does this fault code mean?
The ECM switches the glow plugs on through a relay that sits in the engine bay relay and fuse box. The relay is fed through a fuse and earthed via the control module. The code is set when the signal in the control circuit is too high, missing or too low. A fault can make a diesel engine harder to start, especially when cold.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire open, or shorted to earth or to voltage
- Supply wire to the relay open, or shorted to earth
- Cables to the glow plugs shorted to earth or voltage
- Damaged glow plug relay
What you can do
- 1Check that the glow plug fuse is intact in the engine bay relay and fuse box
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the glow plugs and listen for the relay to click in
- 3Check the connectors at the glow plug relay and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check the relay and glow plug wiring for contact with earth or supply voltage
- 5If the wiring is intact and the fault remains, have a workshop read the system with diagnostic equipment and decide whether the relay needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine starts poorly or not at all
- The engine does not turn over at start attempts
