What does this fault code mean?
The ECM keeps an eye on the cooling fan. If the PWM signal to the fan is too low, the code is set. The cause may be poor connections, an open supply or signal wire, a short to earth, or a damaged fan. The engine may then run hot, or the fan may run all the time.
Possible causes
- Poor connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the terminals
- Break in the power supply to the cooling fan
- Break in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Damaged cooling fan
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the cooling fan connector for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Check that the fan blades are not blocked, since this can set the code
- 3Check the relevant fuse for the cooling fan circuit in the fuse box
- 4Check that the earth cable's connection to the body is tight and free from oxidation
- 5Use a multimeter to check the signal wire for an open circuit and for a short to earth
