What does this fault code mean?

The ECM compares the brake pedal sensor's activation with the brake light signal. If the brake light signal is disturbed, or the brake pedal sensor is activated without a matching brake light signal, the code is set. The code therefore concerns the signals from the brake pedal and the brake lights.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the signal wire from the brake light switch
    • Damaged brake light switch
    • Damaged brake pedal sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the brake lights come on when the pedal is pressed and go off when it is released
    2. 2With the ignition off, check the connectors at the brake light switch and the brake pedal sensor for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check the signal wire from the brake light switch for an open circuit and for a short to earth
    4. 4Braking is safety-critical; if the fault remains, have a workshop replace the brake pedal sensor or the brake light switch

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms for the driver

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
