What does this fault code mean?
The outside temperature sensor measures the outside temperature. If the central electronic module (CEM) detects a fault with the sensor, it sends a message to the engine control module, which then sets the code. The ECM can also set it if the sensor signal differs from the calculated temperature. If the fault comes from the CEM, fix it there first; the code can be cleared once that is done.
Possible causes
- Fault in the central electronic module (CEM), which sends the fault message
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged outside temperature sensor
- Signal wire short-circuited to earth
- Open circuit in the CAN network or contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) first and remedy them; this code cannot be cleared until they are fixed
- 2Check the outside temperature sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Inspect the wiring to the sensor for chafing, since a chafed wire can short to supply voltage or earth
- 4With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check the signal wire for an open circuit and for a short to earth or supply voltage
- 5If everything is in order and the fault remains, the sensor may be damaged; a workshop should decide whether to replace it

- The value from the intake air temperature sensor in the air mass meter is used if it works; otherwise a fixed value is used
