ECM-1111
VOLVO
ECM-1111 - Accelerator pedal position sensor. Idling switch faulty signal. Intermittent fault
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The accelerator pedal sensor combines a position sensor with an idling switch. The ECM sets the code when it finds a fault on the position sensor's signal wire, on its supply, or on the idling switch wire. The fault comes and goes, and it may show as a poor response from the accelerator and a raised idle.
Possible causes
- Signal wire to the position sensor shorted to supply voltage, shorted to earth, or open, intermittently
- Supply wire to the position sensor shorted to battery voltage or earth
- Defective accelerator pedal position sensor
- Defective engine control module (ECM)
- Open circuit in the earth wire to the idling switch
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read out the fault code status and see whether the fault is still present
- 2With the ignition off, check the accelerator pedal connector and wiring for loose contacts, oxidation and chafing
- 3With the pedal released the idling switch should be closed, and it should open when the pedal is pressed; check this with a multimeter
- 4Check the earth wire to the accelerator pedal sensor for an intermittent open circuit, since that can cause the fault
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the accelerator pedal sensor and wiring with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator lamp lit
- No response from the accelerator pedal
- High idling speed
What the fault can affect1
- Idle speed is raised
