What does this fault code mean?
The engine coolant temperature sensor, which measures coolant temperature, sends a faulty signal to the engine control module. Engine management uses the temperature to control, among other things, fuel mixture and ignition, so a wrong value can affect how the engine runs.
Possible causes
- Open circuit or short circuit to ground in the signal wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and check whether it returns
- 2Unplug the engine temperature sensor connector and check it for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken and has no contact with ground
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with supply voltage
- 5The code can be set wrongly if exhaust gas recirculation is tested before the engine has reached operating temperature, so check that the fault remains once the engine is warm
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the engine temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
