ECM-1133
VOLVO
ECM-1133 - Battery voltage. Battery voltage too low
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered that the battery voltage has been too low or too high. The voltage should stay within a normal range, and when it falls outside it the code is set. Low voltage usually comes from the battery or poor connections, while high voltage more often comes from the charging system.
Possible causes
- Defective alternator or charge regulator, giving voltage that is too high or too low
- Defective battery
- Contact resistance in the battery connections
What you can do
- 1Check that the battery terminals are secure and free from corrosion
- 2Check that the earth connection between the battery and the body is clean and tight
- 3Use a multimeter to measure the battery voltage with the engine off and running, and check that it is steady and neither too high nor too low
- 4Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 5If the voltage is too high or too low, have a workshop check the alternator and charge regulator
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
