What does this fault code mean?
With the brake pedal untouched, the engine control module compares the stop lamp switch with the brake pedal switch. If the two give conflicting readings for a period, the code is set. It has happened intermittently, and it can stop the cruise control working and make the brake lights stay on.
Possible causes
- Signal wire from the brake pedal switch shorted to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the brake pedal switch signal or ground wire
- Signal wire from the stop lamp switch shorted to supply voltage
- Incorrectly fitted stop lamp switch or brake pedal switch
- Defective stop lamp switch or brake pedal switch
What you can do
- 1Check that the stop lamp switch and the brake pedal switch are correctly fitted
- 2Check the connections at the pedal and at the stop lamp switch by eye for loose contacts, oxidation and damage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the switches are not broken and do not touch supply voltage
- 4Because the brake pedal is involved, have a workshop check the brake switches if the fault returns, so that the brake lights work as they should
- 5Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
Symptoms you may notice3
- The malfunction indicator lamp comes on
- Cruise control does not work at all
- The brake lights stay on constantly
What the fault can affect1
