What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has found a fault in how the throttle is controlled, or a broken link between it and the throttle module's own control unit. The throttle cannot then be controlled as intended and engine output is limited. The fault can lie in connectors, communication wires or the throttle system control unit.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Communication wires short-circuited to ground or supply voltage, or broken
- Defective throttle system control unit
What you can do
- 1Read the codes and deal first with those for the throttle system, as ECM-0120, ECM-0225, ECM-1221, ECM-1223, ECM-1224, ECM-1225 and ECM-1228 may share the same cause
- 2Check the connectors to the throttle relay, position sensor, motor, pedal sensor and control units for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the communication wires are not broken and have no short to ground or supply voltage
- 4Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 5If nothing is found, the fault may be intermittent or the throttle system control unit may be defective, which a workshop should check
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp on
- The car performs worse
- Fuel consumption is high
- Cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect2
- Engine output is limited
- Cruise control is switched off
