System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
Communication between the engine control module and the throttle module control unit is missing or wrong. The code is set, and the idle speed may be higher than normal. The fault can lie in the connectors, the communication wires or the throttle module control unit.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wires between the engine control module and the throttle module control unit
- Signal wires shorted to ground or supply voltage
- Defective throttle module control unit
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors on the throttle relay, the throttle control unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wires between the engine control module and the throttle control unit are not broken or shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 3Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 4If nothing is found, an intermittent fault or a faulty throttle control unit is likely, and a workshop should check it
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp on
- Idle speed is high
What the fault can affect1
- Idle speed is raised
