ECM-1224 - Electronic throttle module, servo 1. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The current to the first phase of the throttle motor is outside its normal range, which the engine control module has registered. The second phase then takes over throttle control, and engine output is limited. The fault can lie in the connectors, the motor wiring or the throttle module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open or short circuit to ground or supply voltage in the throttle motor signal wires
- Defective throttle module
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors to the throttle motor and its control unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Have a workshop measure the resistance of the throttle motor and replace the motor if needed
- 3Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 4If nothing is found, the fault may be intermittent or the throttle motor may be defective, which a workshop should check
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator light is on
- The car performs worse
- Fuel consumption is high
- Cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect3
- Engine output is limited
- Lean-burn operation is not possible
- Cruise control is switched off
