Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has seen the second pedal sensor channel reading too low, or too high while the idle switch is off. It may also have found that the two pedal sensor circuits, each within its normal range, disagree with each other, in which case code ECM-0220 is set alongside. The fault can lie in the connector, the wiring or the pedal sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire for circuit 2, or that wire shorted to ground or supply voltage
- Defective accelerator pedal sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the accelerator pedal sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation, and make sure it locks securely
- 2With your own diagnostic tool, read both pedal sensor signals while pressing the pedal from fully released to fully pressed; they should follow each other
- 3Clear the codes and road test to see whether the fault returns
- 4If it remains, have a workshop check the accelerator pedal sensor and replace it if needed
- 5Drive carefully until repaired, as throttle response and cruise control may be limited
Symptoms you may notice4
- The malfunction indicator lamp comes on
- The car performs worse
- Fuel consumption is high
- Cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect3
- Engine speed is limited
- Lean-burn operation is not possible
- Cruise control is switched off
