What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) calculates how much air should enter the engine from throttle position, engine speed and other values, and compares the result with the MAF sensor reading. The fault indicates that they do not match. An air leak in the intake is the first suspected cause, but a dirty throttle body or a clogged crankcase ventilation can also cause it. On newer software the fault code has been removed, because the system tolerates larger deviations in air mass.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
- Dirt on the throttle plate
- Clogged crankcase ventilation or PCV nipple
- Damaged MAF sensor
- Contact resistance in the MAF sensor connector
- Damaged fresh-air hose
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the hose between the MAF sensor and the throttle body for leaks and damage
- 3Check that the throttle body is not dirty and that the crankcase ventilation is not clogged, for example by looking for oil deposits in hoses and the intake
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the air mass correction value in live data; low means a clogged ventilation or dirty throttle, high means a leak
- 5Check the MAF sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 6If no leak or dirt is found and the fault remains: have a workshop check whether the car has newer software
Symptoms you may notice1
- Reduced performance
What the fault can affect1
- A value calculated from intake pressure and engine speed is used instead of the sensor reading
