What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns the MAF sensor circuit, which the engine control module (ECM) monitors. It is set when the module detects a short to ground or voltage in that circuit, or an open circuit. Although the code is labelled too low, a short to voltage can set it as well.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged MAF sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Watch the MAF reading in live data with the engine running; a reading that is wrong at the moment points to a permanent fault, a correct one to a sporadic fault
- 3Check the MAF sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check the MAF wiring for chafing, pinch damage and loose clips
- 5With a multimeter, check that the signal wire has no contact with ground or voltage and that it has no break
- 6If the wiring looks fine: have a workshop check the MAF sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine warning lamp comes on
- Engine feels jerky
What the fault can affect1
- The value is worked out from engine speed and intake pressure instead of being measured
