What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the MAF sensor's measured value with a calculated target value. The code reports a negative or positive deviation: negative means the sensor shows less air than calculated, positive means more. If the deviation shows up right after the engine is switched off, the code is an offset fault instead. A sticking EGR valve can cause it, but so can a leak after the sensor or a faulty sensor.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake after the MAF sensor
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Damaged EGR valve or EGR actuator
- Faulty MAF sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check for air leaks in the intake after the MAF sensor, including gaskets and hoses
- 3Check the MAF sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation, and check the wiring for breaks
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: with the engine idling, activate the EGR valve and see whether the air mass drops; if it does not drop, the EGR valve may be stuck
- 5If no leak or connector fault is found: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the MAF sensor and the EGR valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
