What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously checks that the MAF sensor signal is plausible and follows the sensor's normal characteristic. The fault is set if the signal is too high or too low. Although the code is labelled too low, a signal that is too high can set it as well.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the ground wire to the MAF sensor
- Damaged MAF sensor
- Signal wire shorted to ground
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the MAF sensor connectors are free from contact resistance, play and oxidation
- 3With a multimeter, check that the ground wire to the MAF sensor has no open circuit
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read air mass in live data with the engine running and check that it rises as engine speed rises
- 6If the wiring is fine: have a workshop check the MAF sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Reduced performance
What the fault can affect1
- A calculated air mass is used instead of the sensor reading
