What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns the EGR valve. The engine control module (ECM) monitors its function and, when needed, runs an adaption to check that the values are reasonable. If the adaption shows a fault, the fault is set and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is switched off. It can come from poor contact, or from a valve that is stuck by soot and dirt.
Possible causes
- Play, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the EGR valve
- Incorrect limit values during the EGR valve adaption
- Damaged EGR position sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the EGR valve connectors for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not stuck by soot and dirt, for example by looking at whether the hoses are sooty
- 4Check the wiring to the EGR valve for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
- 5After a repair the EGR valve must be adapted again, which a workshop does with diagnostic equipment
- 6If the connectors and wiring are fine: have a workshop check the EGR valve and its position sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- A text message appears in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is switched off
