What does this fault code mean?
When the engine starts, the ECM compares the intake air temperature with the values from the fuel, outside air and engine temperature sensors. If the intake air temperature is too high compared with them, the fault is set, and the engine may be hard to start.
Possible causes
- Damaged intake air temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the intake air temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the intake air temperature sensor connections for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare intake air temperature with outside air temperature in live data when the engine is cold; they should be close to the ambient temperature
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: if the intake air temperature differs from the outside air temperature now, the fault is permanent; otherwise it has been intermittent
- 5Check that the sensor wiring has no chafing or breaks
- 6If the connectors and wiring are fine: have a workshop check or replace the intake air temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine warning lamp comes on
- The engine is hard to start
What the fault can affect1
- The outside air temperature sensor value is used instead of the intake air temperature
