What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously checks that the MAF sensor signal is plausible and follows the sensor's characteristic. The fault is set when the signal is faulty, so also when it is too high, not only when it is too low.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the ground wire
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Damaged MAF sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the MAF sensor connections for contact resistance, play and oxidation
- 3With a multimeter, check that the ground wire to the MAF sensor has no break
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read air mass in live data with the engine running and check that it follows the accelerator pedal and engine speed smoothly
- 5If the connectors are fine: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the MAF sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Reduced performance
- Engine warning lamp comes on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control works out the air mass itself
