What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares intake pressure with EGR control active and inactive. If the pressure does not change enough when EGR control is active, the fault is set. It can be caused by the EGR valve being stuck open, a blocked exhaust system or a damaged control to the EGR valve.
Possible causes
- EGR valve stuck in the open position
- Blocked exhaust system
- Damaged control of the EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the exhaust system is not clogged or damaged, so the exhaust gases can flow freely
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not stuck by soot and dirt, since that can cause the fault
- 4Check the wiring and connectors to the EGR valve for chafing, breaks and contact resistance
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the EGR valve at idle and check that the intake pressure changes clearly; if it does not, the valve may be stuck
- 6If none of this gives a fault: have a workshop check the EGR valve and its control
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine warning lamp comes on
- Rough idle
