What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the EGR valve. The fault is set when the signal from the EGR valve position sensor (potentiometer) is faulty. It can be caused by poor contact, a break or a short in the wiring, or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Play, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the EGR valve
- Open circuit or short in the supply to the EGR valve position sensor
- Open circuit or short in the signal wire
- Open circuit or short in the ground wire
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the EGR valve connectors for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not stuck by dirt and soot; this alone can set the fault
- 4Check the wiring to the EGR valve for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the EGR valve position in live data with the engine running and check that it changes when the valve is activated
- 6If the wiring is fine: have a workshop check the EGR valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- Engine power is limited
