What does this fault code mean?
The outside air temperature sensor signal goes through the central electronics module (CEM) to the engine control module (ECM). The fault is set when the sensor is shorted to ground, and also when the CEM judges the signal to be above its normal range.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged outside air temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1First read the fault codes in the central electronics module (CEM) and fix them
- 2Check the outside air temperature sensor connectors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the wire to the outside air temperature sensor for a short to ground, chafing and pinch damage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the outside temperature in live data and check that it is reasonable compared with the surroundings
- 5If the wiring is fault-free and the fault remains: have a workshop measure the resistance of the outside air temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- Engine warning lamp comes on
- Hard starting, or the engine cranks slowly at start
- The outside temperature gauge shows wrong values or does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The intake air temperature sensor value is used instead of the outside air temperature
