What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the EGR control. The fault is set when a fault in the EGR valve or its wiring causes incorrect EGR control, so the cause can be in the valve, the connectors or the wiring. EGR control is switched off while the fault is present.
Possible causes
- Play, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the EGR valve
- EGR valve stuck by dirt or soot
- Open circuit in the wire to the EGR valve
- Wire to the EGR valve shorted to ground or voltage
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the EGR valve connectors for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not stuck by dirt and soot
- 4Check the wire to the EGR valve for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the EGR valve at idle and see whether the air flow or intake pressure changes
- 6If the wiring is fault-free: have a workshop check the EGR valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- EGR control is switched off
- Engine power is limited
