What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the EGR valve and reads the signal from its position sensor. The fault is set when the signal is faulty or unreasonable. The cause can be poor contact in the connections to the EGR valve or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Play, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connectors to the engine control module and the EGR valve for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the EGR position sensor wire for a short to voltage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check that the EGR position value in live data moves when the valve is activated, and stays still if it does not
- 5If the wiring is fault-free: have a workshop check the EGR valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
