What does this fault code mean?
In the engine control module (ECM) the outside air temperature is compared with a calculated temperature. If the signal is lower than the calculated one, the fault is set, even though the signal itself lies within its normal range. The fault is only checked after a longer drive.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Damaged outside air temperature sensor
- Damaged intake air temperature sensor
- The cause may lie in the central electronics module (CEM)
What you can do
- 1If the fault code for the intake air temperature sensor is also stored, troubleshoot this code first
- 2Check the outside air temperature sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the outside temperature in live data with the intake temperature after the car has stood still for a while; they should be roughly equal
- 4Check that the outside air temperature sensor is seated properly, and have a workshop measure its resistance if needed
- 5Clear the CEM fault code once it has been fixed, and read the fault codes there first, since this code cannot be cleared until the CEM fault is gone

- Engine warning lamp comes on
- Starting problems, the engine cranks slowly
- The outside temperature gauge does not work or shows wrong values
