What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the electric cooling fan. The fault is set when the voltage on the signal wire to the fan control module is too low, or when the signal is missing or faulty. The cause can be a short to ground or voltage, or a break in the wire.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control module shorted to ground
    • Break in the signal wire between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control module
    • Signal wire between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control module shorted to voltage

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses for the electric cooling fan are intact; their position is in the owner's manual
    2. 2Read the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
    3. 3Check the signal wire between the engine control module and the fan control module for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the electric cooling fan with the engine running and check that it starts
    5. 5If the wiring is fault-free: have a workshop check the fan control module

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine cools less well and may overheat or run hot

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
