What does this fault code mean?
The ECM keeps watch over the idle control and sets the fault code when idle speed runs higher than expected. A common reason is air leaking into the intake system past the air measurement, so the engine gets more air than the control module has calculated for.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the engine control module are intact; the fuse locations are often on the inside of the fuse box cover
- 2Check that the hoses and clamps in the intake system are firmly fitted and not cracked or loose
- 3With the engine idling, listen for hissing noises from the intake, which can show a leak
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the idle speed in live data with the engine idling and check whether it is steady or jumps around
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the intake system and the idle control
Symptoms you may notice2
- High idle, the engine runs faster than usual when the car is standing still
- The fault may show all the time or only now and then
