What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) works out the engine torque in two separate ways, using signals from the air mass sensor, the throttle unit and the intake pressure sensor, and compares the results. If they differ too much, fault code ECM-1585 is set.
Possible causes
- Loose contact in the electronic throttle module (ETM)
- Air leak in the intake pipe after the air mass sensor and the throttle unit
- Damaged throttle unit
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Damaged flywheel sensor
- Damaged intake pressure sensor
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check that the throttle unit's vibration damper is correctly fitted. If it is missing, it should be fitted
- 2Check the connector to the throttle unit for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Look for air leaks in the intake pipe after the air mass sensor and the throttle unit
- 4If the codes keep returning, the throttle unit and its connector should be replaced, which is a job for a workshop
- 5If ECM-2107, ECM-2110, ECM-2111, ECM-2112 or ECM-2135 are also stored, they often come from the same fault, so start with the throttle unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine starts poorly or not at all
- The car lacks power
- Throttle response hesitates, or the engine jerks or surges
What the fault can affect1
- Engine torque is limited through the throttle position, so the maximum allowed torque depends on how far the accelerator pedal is pressed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
