ECM-1610 - Immobilizer. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) gets no communication from the immobilizer control module, or the immobilizer does not allow the engine to start. The fault code is also stored in the immobilizer control module. It can also be set when keys are being programmed, even with no fault present.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Communication wire short-circuited to ground or voltage
- Fault in the immobilizer system
What you can do
- 1If keys were recently programmed or replaced, the code may have been set with no real fault. Try starting with another of the car's keys
- 2Switch off the ignition and check the connectors between the engine control module and the immobilizer control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3With a multimeter, check that the communication wire between the modules is not broken and is not short-circuited to ground or voltage
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop read the fault codes in the immobilizer control module, since the code is stored there
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start
