What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks the signal from the servo pressure switch, which senses pressure in the power steering system, against its normal range. If the signal is outside that range while the engine runs, fault code ECM-1650 is set. The control module uses the signal to compensate for the torque the power steering takes.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or poor contact in the connections
- Open circuit or short to ground in the signal wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage
What you can do
- 1On cars with hydraulic power steering: switch off the ignition and check the servo pressure switch connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2With a multimeter, check that the signal wire from the servo pressure switch is not broken or shorted to ground or voltage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the servo pressure switch changes state when the steering wheel is turned to full lock
- 4Check that the relevant fuses are intact, for example in the fuse box
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the servo pressure switch and the hydraulic pressure system
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
