What does this fault code mean?
The ECM runs a self-test when the ignition is switched on and when the engine starts, and during it checks the brake pedal sensor. If the sensor is seen as active during the test, or gives faulty signals at engine start, fault code ECM-1703 is set.
Possible causes
- Driver error: brake pedal pressed during the ECM self-test
- Damaged brake pedal sensor
What you can do
- 1Do not press the brake pedal when the ignition is switched on or when the engine starts. Then clear the fault code
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the brake pedal sensor goes from off to on when the pedal is pressed, and back when it is released
- 3Switch off the ignition and check the brake pedal sensor connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Braking is safety-critical: if the pedal feels odd, do not drive the car until a workshop has checked it
- 5If the code returns although the pedal is not pressed at start-up, have a workshop replace the brake pedal sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
