ECM-180A
VOLVO
ECM-180A - Accelerator pedal (AP) position sensor 1. Faulty power supply
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The accelerator pedal has two sensors. The ECM monitors the power supply to sensor 1, and if that supply is faulty the fault code is set. The engine is then controlled by sensor 2 instead.
Possible causes
- Power supply wire short-circuited to system voltage
- Power supply wire short-circuited to ground
- Defective accelerator pedal position sensor
- Defective engine control module
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check the accelerator pedal sensor connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2With a multimeter, check that the supply wire to sensor 1 is not shorted to ground or to system voltage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that both pedal sensors show reasonable values and track each other as the pedal is pressed
- 4Because the engine is then controlled by only one sensor, have a workshop correct the fault
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- The engine is controlled by pedal sensor 2 instead
