ECM-1828 - Brake pedal switch. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The ECM compares the brake light switch with the brake pedal switch. If the two show different states for a set period, fault code ECM-1828 is set. Cars without cruise control have only the brake light switch, which is operated by the brake pedal.
Possible causes
- Signal wire to the brake pedal switch shorted to voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire to the brake pedal switch
- Signal wire to the brake light switch shorted to voltage
- Switch at the brake pedal incorrectly fitted or adjusted
- Defective brake pedal switch or brake light switch
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check that the brake light switch and the brake pedal switch are correctly fitted and free of play and oxidation
- 2With a multimeter, check that the signal wires from the switches are not shorted to voltage and are not broken
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the brake light switch and the brake pedal switch change together as the pedal is pressed and released
- 4Braking is safety-critical. If the pedal feels different or the brake lights stay on, do not drive the car until a workshop has checked the braking system
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop adjust or replace the switches at the brake pedal
Symptoms you may notice2
- Cruise control does not work at all
- The brake lights stay on all the time
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off
