What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) sends engine fuel consumption data to the instrument cluster, which shows it in the trip computer. The ECM has registered that the signal on the wire to the instrument cluster is too low. The fault mainly affects the trip computer values and is most often caused by an open circuit or a short to ground in the signal wire, although a defective instrument cluster can also set the code.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Defective instrument cluster
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, then check whether it returns
- 2Look for any stored fault codes in the instrument cluster and fix those first
- 3Check the connectors at the instrument cluster and on the signal wire for play and corrosion
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground (body)
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the fuel consumption value in live data and see whether it updates while you drive
Symptoms you may notice1
- The trip computer shows incorrect values
