What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) has registered that the signal from the engine coolant temperature sensor is too low. The fault can be caused by the circuit being short-circuited to ground, by poor contact in the connections or by a damaged sensor. The engine control module then uses a calculated engine temperature, and the cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire short-circuited to ground
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
    • Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and clear the fault code and check whether it returns
    2. 2Be careful around the cooling fan: it can start even when the ignition is off, so keep hands and tools away from it
    3. 3Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for play, oxidation and corrosion
    4. 4Check the wire to the sensor for chafing, pinch damage and a short to ground
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not short-circuited to ground (body)
    6. 6If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine coolant temperature in live data and check that it follows the engine warming up

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
    • The engine is difficult to start when warm
    • Uneven idle
    • The engine may stop, but only when it is warm
    • The cooling fan can keep running with the ignition off

    What the fault can affect2

    • A calculated engine temperature is used instead of the sensor signal
    • The engine cooling fan runs at low speed

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
