What does this fault code mean?
The ECM compares the coolant temperature sensor reading with the intake air and outside air temperatures once the engine has stood for a long while. If the sensor value deviates too much from the other temperatures, the code is set. The fault can be caused by poor contact in the sensor connector, a defective thermostat or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Poor contact in the sensor connector
- Defective thermostat
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code and check whether it returns
- 2Check the sensor connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation, and check the wire for chafing and open circuit
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the engine coolant temperature in live data with the intake and outside air temperatures after the car has stood still for a long while
- 4Check that the thermostat opens as the engine warms up
- 5Keep your hands away from the cooling fan during checks, since it can start even when the ignition is off
- 6Have a workshop replace the engine coolant temperature sensor if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine is difficult to start, especially on a hot restart
- Driveability problems during warm-up
- The cooling fan can keep running with the ignition off
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- The engine stalls, but only when warm
What the fault can affect3
- The engine coolant temperature is calculated theoretically after start
- The engine cooling fan runs at low speed
- Engine torque may be limited
