What does this fault code mean?
The ECM has registered that the signal from the coolant temperature sensor is faulty. The fault can come from poor contact in the sensor connector or from a damaged sensor. A thermostat that is not working properly can also set the code.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the sensor connector
- Defective thermostat
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code and check whether it returns
- 2Check the coolant temperature sensor connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine coolant temperature in live data and check that it rises sensibly during warm-up
- 4Check that the thermostat opens as the engine warms up
- 5Have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor if the fault remains

- The engine is difficult to start when warm
- Driveability problems during warm-up
- The cooling fan can keep running with the ignition off
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- Uneven idle

- The engine cooling fan is activated at a predefined speed
