What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the heater circuit of the front oxygen sensor shortly after the ignition is switched on. If the circuit is short-circuited to ground or supply voltage, or has an open circuit, the code is set. The fault can come from the wiring to the sensor or from a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Damaged oxygen sensor or damaged sensor control circuit
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code and check whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector at the front oxygen sensor is firmly seated and free from oxidation; do not use penetrating spray or grease on it
- 3Check the wiring to the oxygen sensor for chafing, pinch damage and loose contacts
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the heater wire to the oxygen sensor has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 5Have a workshop replace the oxygen sensor if the fault remains after these checks
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
What the fault can affect1
- Fuel trim and the front sensor heater are switched off after repeated restart attempts by the sensor control
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
