VOLVO
ECM-211D - Long-term fuel trim, bank 2. Signal too low
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)

Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has had to correct the fuel mixture for the bank 2 oxygen sensor so much that the long-term correction has nearly reached its upper limit at upper part load. The mixture therefore deviates strongly from the target, and the cause can be an air leak, a fuel system fault or a sensor that does not measure correctly.
Possible causes
- Air leakage in the intake system, for example through the EVAP valve or the hose to the brake booster
- High fuel pressure
- Leaking fuel injectors
- Damaged mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Contaminated engine oil or oil level too high
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) on bank 2
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Inspect the intake hoses, connections and clamps for cracks and loose parts, and check the hose to the brake booster too
- 3Check that the oil level is between the min and max marks on the dipstick, and that the oil does not look cloudy or smell of fuel
- 4Look for fuel smell and leaks at the fuel lines
- 5Have a diagnostic tool? Follow the long-term fuel trim for bank 2 in live data at idle with the engine warm, and compare with bank 1
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop measure the fuel pressure and check the injectors, the mass air flow sensor and the bank 2 oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
