What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a signal that is too low, the condition is that the long-term fuel trim for bank 1 has nearly reached its extreme position at lower part load. The mixture then deviates strongly from the target, and the fault can come from leaks, fuel pressure, injectors, the mass air flow sensor or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Intake air leakage
- High fuel pressure
- Leaking fuel injectors
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
- Contaminated engine oil or oil level too high
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor on bank 1
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the intake system for air leakage, for example the hose to the brake booster and the hoses to the EVAP valve
- 3Look for fuel leaks and wet patches under the car
- 4Check the oil level against the min and max marks on the dipstick, and whether the oil looks cloudy or smells of fuel
- 5Have a diagnostic tool? Read the mass air flow sensor value in live data at idle and check that it is steady
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the fuel pressure and check the injectors and the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Fuel consumption is abnormally high
